After Ruby Knowby's (Lucy Lawless) attempt to destroy the Necronomicon
resulted in quite the opposite last
episode - including the book's front cover attaching itself to
Pablo's (Ray Santiago) face - she reveals her true intentions, she
actually wants to summon the Dark Ones back to this earth and rule the
world with their help. Ash (Bruce Campbell) of course tries to stop her,
but before he knows it she snatches Pablo and escapes to the cabin's
basement, a place Ash has bad experiences with ever since the original
Evil Dead. Nevertheless he follows Ruby and Pablo, and is almost
immediately cut off from his other companion Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) and
their new friend Heather (Samara Weaving). What's more, Kelly is chucked
out of the house, Heather is brutally dismembered inside, and ultimately
Kelly sets fire to the place just to get in again, and ultimately she
makes it to the basement to help Ash fight Ruby and Pablo, who's slowly
turning into a demon. But when all seems lost for the good guys, Ash
accepts a truce offer from Ruby that would save him and Pablo and Kelly -
but pretty much hand over the world to Ruby and the Dark Ones ... A
fitting finale to the first season of Ash vs. Evil Dead,
this one is set again in the almost iconic cabin and mixes grindhouse
sensibilities and gruesomeness with humour that comes across especially
well because it seems so misplaced - and especially in that light, the
final resolution makes so much sense as Ash once again proves to be
horror's most fallible hero, making all the wrong decisions for the right
reasons. And of course, Bruce Campbell's portrayal of Ash is once again
flawless, making this a very fun watch.
