After having been scratched across the forehead by Baal's (Joel Tobeck)
finger last episode,
Ash (Bruce Campbell) wakes up in an insane asylum where according to his
doctor he has spent the last 30 years to cure him from the delusions that
led him to kill his friends and sister back when (as in the original Evil
Dead). Of course, this doctor is actually Baal, so Ash knows
something's up, especially since Baal is so eager for Ash to "destroy
the book" to rid himself of his delusions. The good doctor's methods
prove to be everything from the archaic - electric shocks - to the
unconventional - giving Ash a handpuppet, Ashy Slashy -, enough to
convince Ash he has to escape. And he soon has his hopes high again when
he finds his friends among the asylum personnel, Pablo (Ray Santiago)
proves to be an orderly, Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless) a nurse, and Kelly (Dana
DeLorenzo) a nurse. But an attempt to make an escape with Kelly only ends
in a bloodbath that leaves both Pablo and Kelly murdered, and the good
doctor shows Ash security camera footage that it was actually him who
killed both, which finally seems to break Ash ...
An episode that tries something a bit different by letting the comedy
take backseat (though it's still there) to play up the drama aspects and
going for straight horror - and that works surprisingly well, even despite
some rather clichéed scenes, that though seem to mostly be there to
underscore the artificiality of the episode where things aren't supposed
to feel quite right.
A cool spot of colour in the series for sure.
