To efficiently modernizing his hospital, doctor Amitabh Bachchan
hides his heart condition form everyone from fellow doctors to patients
to bankers who are to give him money to his son Akash (Anil Kapoor).
Akash, meanwhile, a talented brain surgeon, falls in love with his
anaethesist Neha (Gracy Singh), & since she loves him back
everything seems bright & shiny ...
Enter Sonya (Preity Zinta),
spoilt daughter of a rich industrialist, who wants Akash too, & she
is not used to not getting what she wants. So her father wants to buy
Akash's love with a large donation to Amitabh Bachchan's hospital - but
Amitabh refuses to accept the money on these terms. Unfortunately,
though, Amitabh's heart condition gets the better of him when he rescues
a dying boy ... & after his death, Akash has only one aim, to
fulfill his father's dream of a modern hospital - even if this means to
marry Sonya (& it does).
But now Sonya, not yet content, wants
Neha (whose heart is broken anyways, thrown out of the hospital, the
city. But that Akash refuses, & not even Sonya's attempted suicide
can change his mind or bring the couple closer to each other.
Only when
she is driving to Neha's place to threaten her with a gun, maybe to even kill her, but has an accident on the way,
& is saved by Akash's
surgery - assisted by Neha - she sees her wrongs & agrees to
divorce Akash, leaving him for good. As melodrams about
doctors go, this one's pretty good (& I'm not a fan of this genre in
the first place), with a reasonable pace, solid performances, the story
always bordering psychothriller-territory, & the cheesy stuff mainly
done in song-&-dance routines (which is common in Indian movies)
rather than very bad dialogue (which would be common for Hollywood
movies). Also, the dead Amitabh appearing now & again during the
movie as Akash's conscience (or is it really his father's ghost), while
not being a completely new idea does work quite well.
