A desparate family lives in an insignificant village inthe mountains,
and yet the noise of the war that wages draws closer and closer - but
there's no more food in the house, and father's (Sabir Mammadov) in pain,
so mother (Basti Jafarova) decides to go out to get some food and
medicine, even if her daughter Farida (Konul Iskender) begs her not to.
But mother isn't one to be stopped, maybe though giving in to the
inevitable - and indeed, as her soldier brother Ali (Adil Damirov) soon
tells Farida, she didn't make it. But the enemy draws ever nearer, and
Farida has to realize it's all up to her ... Now a word of
warning up front, don't watch Araf to lift your spirits, it's one
depressing film, not only because of its story that leaves no room for a
happy ending, also for its direction that, while showing very little and
leaving the whole war-aspect of the movie to the soundtrack, really
immerses the audience in the depression and hoplessness of the
protagonists, choosing atmosphere over spectacle, telling its story at a
slow pace to let brooding feelings blossom, and making plenty of use of
the dark, both literally and virtually. The outcome is quite impressive,
but prepare to be depressed all the same.
