It's New Year's Eve, and Sam (Michelle Mylett) is crushed because her
boyfriend (Charlie Hamilton) has just dumped her, and not even face to
face but via socialredroom.com, the social media of the afternoon.
This hits Sam so hard she deletes her socialredroom-profile. Later, at a
small scale New Year's party, she already starts to regret deleting her
profile, as everyone else seems to be on the site all the time, via
laptop, smartphone and whatnot. ... and then all hell breaks loose, as a
sort of killing spree-virus seems to have affected the whole world, and
suddenly Sam and her friends (Cody Ray Thompson, Adam Christie, Ana Alic,
Romaine Waite) see themselves surrounded by infected and have to board the
whole house up. That's only the beginning though, as soon, Sam's friends
find themselves infected one after the other, and when trying to figure
out what's going on, Sam finds out that it all has to do with a virus,
carried via socialredroom.com that has some very unexpected and
violent side effects - basically hallucinations and homicidal tendencies.
And one after the other, Sam's friends go insane and can only be stopped
by killing them. It's only when they are reduced to Sam and best friend
Mark (Cody Ray Thompson) that they learn about a cure. Now there are a few
problems: Mark is starting to show the symptoms, and Sam is no longer sure
she's not infected ... and the cure involves running a household
powerdrill into your skull. Plus, if the cure's just that, a cure ...
who's to say the world is still a worthy place to live in? ... On
a pure narrative level, Antisocial might seem like little more than
a blend of slasher and zombie motives (which might already sound
interesting enough mind you), but what really makes the film is the biting
satire of "social" life of the 21st century, driven to the
extreme (and without ever becoming pedestrian), coupled with a plot that
avoids becoming sensationalist and still features plenty of unexpected
plottwists and surprises, an interesting cast of characters embodied by a
competent cast, and a directorial effort that favours subtlety over
spectacle. Recommended, actually.
