It starts with a crash, that will ultimately tie up three stories of
three couples living in the same appartment building complex, whose
relationships have all gone sour (to various degrees).
First couple, Eva (Petra Morzé) and Alfred (Hary Prinz): The two lead
a normal and increasingly dull married life, with looking for a new
appartment being the highlight of the week. So Eva, a doctor at a
hospital, has taken herself a lover, Tomasz (Andreas Patton), whom she
frequently meets for hours of uninhibited sex in his hotelroom, often
lieing to her husband that she has to go on nightshift ...
But then Thomasz has to leave town, and on his way to the airport, his
cab is hit by a speeding car ...
Second couple, Sonja (Susanne Wuest) and Marco (Dennis Cubic): She is
madly in love with him, wants to marry him and to that even lies to him
that she's expecting a baby, but she also has these fits of jealousy. Her
jealousy always seems to be unfounded though, it really seems to be her
imagination ... until one day she follows him when he walks the dog, and
finds him going into Nicole's (Martina Zimmer) appartment - with whom he,
by the way, is really having an affair. In shock, she drinks a bottle of
whiskey and takes all sorts of pills ... Marco gets home just in time and
gets her to the hospital right away - the very same hospital Tomasz is
treated after the carcrash,a dn the very same hospital Eva works at.
Sonja survives, but claims she has lost her baby.
Third couple, Nicole and Alex (Andreas Kiendl): They are already
seperated, and Nicole doesn't want to see him anymore - actually she even
has a new lover, Marco -, but Alex refuses to accept that, and the more
she tries to lock him out of her life, the more he tries to get back in,
even by using sheer force ... and one day, he even meets Marco in Nicole's
appartment, and he tries to beat him up but good to impress Nicole ... but
despite all his efforts, Nicole doesn't stop caring for Marco and only
detests Alex even more.
Utterly humiliated, Alex leaves, crashes Marco's cheapo car with his
fancy convertible, then races through the streets ... until he fails to
see a red light, and crashes into a cab, Tomasz's cab ... alex dies
instantly ...
The idea of telling three loosely intewoven seperate stories is not
quite new, in fact it has been done countless times, with variuos degrees
of success. In Antares, the concept works rather well, as the three
stories deal with the same concept from a different perspective, and also
the interweaving of the stories makes sense, with the central carcrash
having an effect on all three stories.
However, the film is not without its faults, the direction seems rather
bland and the script is not free of lengths. Still, it makes interesting
and intelligent viewing, and for all you voyeurs out there, some
sex-scenes in the first story are quite explicit.
