Deputy Barney (Don Knotts) wants to participate in a singing contest,
the winner of which will represent the town in the stagte capital. Thing
is, he hasn't got a musical bone in his body. Sheriff Andy (Andy Griffith)
though finds out that local hillbilly Rafe (Jack Prince) has a lovely
voice, so he sends him to the contest with Barney - and Rafe wins of
course. This victory doesn't go well with the mayor (Parley Baer) and the
head of the ladies league (Isabel Randolph), who first want to make Andy
tell Rafe to resign, then at least make him more presentable - but when
Andy hears all of their prejudices that have nothing to do with his
singing voice, he decides to let Rafe sing in his hillbilly outfit - and
of course Rafe charms everyone. This episode is so cheesy and
its message so sugar-coated it almost gives you diabetes just by looking -
and don't get me wrong, this is pure kitsch not only from today's point of
view, this was considered kitsch even back then (after all, people were
not stupid) - and not kitsch of the good kind ...
