The zombie apocalypse has already happened, most of us are by now
either zombies or eaten by zombies: Max (William Instone) accompanies
Scarlet (Hailley Lauren) and her father (Les Best) to a nearby army camp,
even if he has his reservations against the army, for whatever reason.
Eventually, dad dies in a zombie attack, but Max keeps his word to him to
take Scarlet to the camp, even if his feelings revolt against it. And even
when they meet an army patrol destined to bring them to safety, he can't
shake his feeling of unease. And thus, once Scarlet's settled in with the
army personnel, he just leaves ... This short is best in its
moody bits, of which there are plenty, making this a rather atypical,
atmospheric zombie flick rather than the usual bloodbath (though Among
the Dead does have its fair share of gore). But however original the
film is stylistically, it's not nearly as interesting on a narrative
level, as basically, the whole thing's missing an actual arc, to such an
extent that the ending comes at a very random point in the story, with
nothing resolved and little explained. Still a cool film for its
directorial choices, but could have done with an actual story ...
