Teen Alyssa's (Alyssa Milano) best friends Tiffanie (Tiffanie Poston)
and Michelle (Michelle Simms) call her because they have problems, one's
grounded and the other has to babysit. Alyssa knows the solution to all
their problems - why not do a little workout? ... yeah, I don't know what
the one has to do with the other either, but hey, the eighties were a
weird decade. So here are the girls doing some basic aerobics ... but they
giggle a lot, so it seems to help. Alyssa is quite obviously the
leader/personal trainer during the whole procedure, as she reserves the
right for herself to critique the others, sit out certain exercises ...
and break out in song and dance. Eventually, Alyssa freezes her friends in
suspended animation and escapes to a dance club, too, but not for long,
because she has to return for the girls' cool-down, which lasts for quite
a bit. Everybody feels better in the end and the other girls go hom while
Alyssa repeats the title song from the beginning of the movie. By
1988, Alyssa Milano had already turned into a household name thanks to her
long-running hit sitcom Who's the Boss (1984 - 1992), and
this video (in which both her parents had their hands) was quite obviously
made to not only cash in on her stardom but her evolution from cute kid
actress to quite sexy young woman (she was about 16 at the time this was
made). The result looks like exactly that, a cash-in, as Alyssa is not the
best of trainers, not the best of dancers and not the best of singers
(though she doesn't horribly on either account and is a good looker), and
some of the exercises of course looks a bit too unrehearsed and rushed to
come across as a proper workout video. Plus the narrative bits in this one
are totally out of place ... and all of this is exactly what makes this
little (roughly 45 minutes) so funny (and sought after by camp-collectors
like myself): It's garish outifts in the rendition of a garish 80's girl
room, done to a typical 80's cheap synth score (courtesy of Alyssa's dad),
enriched with some cheap videoclip aesthetics, and its attempt to come
across as both wholesome and, well, steamy - it's really not much of a
work-out video but more of a time warp-like experience, hilarious for all
the wrong reasons but hilarious still.
