Model Tiara (Tamara Blezinski) has been suffering from fear of the
dark for the longest time. So she takes her boyfriend (Kieran Sidhu), her
model friends and a couple of photographers to a far-out exotic island for
a photoshoot - and I have no idea how this is going to help her fear of
the dark. Of course, the island is supposed to be deserted, but somebody
actually seems to be living on the island, in its abandoned canning
factory, anyhow, and he dons a wooden mask and starts to kill Tiara's friends one
by one in the most gruesome fashions because his muddled brain tells him
this way he will attain invulnerability. Ultimately, it's all down to
Tiara and her scared shitless sister Mandy (Navy
Rizky Tavania), and since Mandy is not much help in her
current state, Tiara has to overcome her fear of the dark and use all
her inventiveness to kill the masked killer, who is of course not half as
invulnerable as he thought he'd be. Of course, in the end Tiara succeeds
... Somehow, this film is above all reminiscent of these
Eurohorror flicks from the late 1970's and early 80's, where a feeble excuse
was made to bring a bunch of young people to an exotic island to have them
killed off in the most gruesome manner, and Antropophagus/Man
Eater and Zombi 2/Zombie
Flesh Eaters of course readily spring to mind - though to be quite
honest, the basic premise of these films was old even then. What makes Air
Terjun Pengantin reminiscent of particularly these films anyhow though
is its relentless, explicit and gory violence - paired with sexy girls and
a minimal plot. Still, this doesn't actually say much about the actual
quality of Air Terjun Pengantin, does it? And to tell you the
truth, the film, despite invoking a bit of nostalgia, is at best average,
a by-the-numbers gore epic that's rarely dull or annoying, but at the same
time seriously lacks in the originality department and remains flat
concerning both plot and characters. Still, at least it's good enough
for 80 minutes of mindless fun.
