During his lifetime, FM-2030 was a futurist whose predictions in the
technological field were uncannily on point, a transhumanist philosopher,
former athlete and author. He died in 2000 from pancreatic cancer, but
never believed in death - so he had himself cryogenically frozen to await
revivification into a better world. It's 2016 now, and it's questionable
whether the world has gotten any better, but Dr. Sebastian Smith, the lead
scientist of CLEO, the institution FM-2030 has been frozen at, thinks that
science has advanced far enough to bring FM-2030 back to the living - and
his partner Flora Schnall is overly joyed. So she, along with filmmaker
Johnny Boston, whose mentor FM-2030 was, and his want to be there for the
occasion. Moreso, Boston wants to document the whole process. Thing is,
the people at CLEO are not very open to the documentary idea, while Boston
is quickly running out of money, and eventually leans on Flora for support
under a false pretense - and when she finds out about his true motives,
she cuts funding, refuses to let him be at the revivification, and
basically kills his project. Now Boston is devastated by this, but slowly
has to come to the fact that he has to move on - when he gets some info
from befriended journalist Doug Donovan that with CLEO not all might be
what it seems, and the company might have ulterior motives for reviving
FM-2030 ... Now I'll be perfectly honest, I don't know how much
of this documentary is actually "real", and especially for the
third act I could not find any verification anywhere - and yet the film
spins a nice yarn more engaging than your usual documentary, and even if
the finale might contain a few hyperboles, the film itself gives a good
insight into the world and philosophy of FM-2030, and especially by also
lending an ear to other futurists and scientists from all fields who not
necessarily share the man's beliefs the film manages to give a rounded
picture, and one that gets one thinking. And by actually telling a story
where the filmmaker himself becomes a major character rather than just
filming talking heads, and using clever filmmaking tactics to give the
whole thing a cinematic feel, the viewer really gets sucked into the plot
rather than just being bombarded with facts and factoids. Maybe not the
most accurate of documentaries, but a very interesting one for sure.
