Your new movie All American Bikini Car Wash - in a few words, what is it about, and what can you tell us about your character in it?

Professor Dugan is Jack’s teacher and also a good friend of Jack’s father. I own the car wash as a side business. With Jack failing in school, I allow him, really as a favor to Jack’s dad, to redeem himself by giving him a real life business opportunity: “run it for a week, show a profit, then you pass!”

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much of you can we find in him, actually?

Dugan can be a bit sarcastic, but deep down I think he has a good heart. Dugan knows Jack’s a good kid who deserves a chance. I am a bit sarcastic in real life (ok maybe more than a bit) and I do have a soft spot for the underdog!

Your first thoughts when you heard the title "All American Bikini Car Wash"?

I love the American Pie franchise and so I thought: I get to play in these waters and how cool is that? It’s so relatable being in a movie about real guys acting the way real guys do.

How did you get involved with the project in the first place?

I auditioned for our director Nimrod Zalmanowitz and read with Jason, I felt very comfortable with both of them. Jason was reading Jack’s part in my first scene. I remember Jason was very supportive of me and said some kind words when Rod had to step out of the room for a moment.

Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

I remember being in Vegas on what had to be the coldest day of the year. I have no right to complain though, since I was one of the fully clothed! I can’t imagine how the actors and actresses survived in their swim wear.

I also remember a fun road trip to Vegas… I drove out with Brendan and Ryan. Also had a memorable road trip back to LA… drove back with Brendan and Kayla and her cat. What happens on the road trip to Vegas stays on the road trip to Vegas!

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I have 2 Twentieth Century Fox feature films being released right after the All American Bikini Car Wash premiere. I play Father James in The Exorcism of Molly Hartley with Devon Sawa. We debut Oct. 9 digitally worldwide and then Oct. 20 on Blu-ray and DVD worldwide. Then I play Harvey Ward, a banker without much Christmas spirit in Santa’s Little Helper with WWE superstar Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin. We debut everywhere in November.

What got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I changed careers later in life. I worked in corporate business for most of my adult life and was desperately unhappy. In October 2011, I walked into my first acting class ever and changed my life forever. It’s now my full-time career and I’m finally happy with my professional life.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to All American Bikini Car Wash?

I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve done 13 films in less than 3 years. My biggest success so far is Expelled from Dreamworks/Awesomeness TV. I play the dad of Cameron Dallas, who in real life is an internet superstar. We hit #1 on the iTunes movie charts, beating out Guardians of the Galaxy! The movie is a true digital hit worldwide and I’m very grateful to be a part of it.

How would you describe yourself as an actor, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I love the challenge of acting! I don’t subscribe to any one technique, but the goal is simple: be believable, be real. I draw on a lifetime of experiences and interactions with everyone, so that I can understand every character that I’m lucky enough to play.

Actors (and indeed actresses) who inspire you?

Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jim Carrey. I’m a loyal fan of many actors and actresses that I grew up with… too many to list…but of the classic movie stars I’d list Ann-Margret, Goldie Hawn, Harrison Ford, Steve McQueen.

Your favourite movies?

Of the old b/w classics, certainly the Universal monster movies like Dracula and Frankenstein. 1970s era movies made a huge impact on me: Tommy, Three Musketeers, Three Days of the Condor, and my all-time favorite Halloween. In recent years I’ve leaned more towards TV than film, starting in the 1990s with my love for Twin Peaks and The X-Files.

Your website, Facebook, whatever else?

Website is tom-mclaren.com. Facebook public page is facebook.com/tommclarenpage. Twitter and Instagram @tommclaren1.

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?

I co-authored my first book last year with actress Angela Cartwright titled Styling the Stars: Lost Treasures from the Twentieth Century Fox Archive. It’s filled with previously unseen photos of all the great movie stars. We were published by Insight Editions and have been fortunate enough to win multiple awards.

Lastly, I think All American Bikini Car Wash is the perfect way to spend a Saturday night… pure entertainment… grab a bowl of popcorn and I hope everyone enjoys it!

Thanks for the interview!
