Your new movie Clown Fear - in a few words, what is it about?
The
movie about a cult society of clowns living in the desert.
Everyone that comes into contact with this band of misfits will
quickly learn that these clowns do not play well with outsiders.
A wedding goes South and the girls find themselves driving across
the desert only to break down in front of the Clown Inn.
That's when everything falls apart.
Basic question, why clowns, and do you personally share this quite
popular fear of clowns? The inspiration comes from growing
up watching horror films like Hellraiser,
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
and The Exorcist. I personally don't have a fear of clowns
but after making this movie, it's giving me a respect for them. (Other) sources of inspiration when
writing Clown Fear? I love
comedy, and my first feature film was a dark romantic comedy call Hit List. So when writing this screenplay, I
really wanted to incorporate some humor peppered in with the
horror elements. You've written Clown Fear
together with your leading lady Sadie Katz - so what was your
collaboration like during the writing process?
The process was very tough because we had a very quick turnaround
time table in order to submit the script to Lionsgate.
Sometimes when we are forced to perform, it's when we do some of
our best works.
What can
you tell us about your movie's approach to horror? For
me, a horror film needs to have certain elements. Of
course, we need a good storyline, added in with the right
percentage of gore, nudity and suspense.
Clown Fear
is a
throwback to the slasher horror films of the 80s. A few
words about your directorial approach to your story at hand?
The way I approach directing is to make the movie feel as true to
life as possible. Life imitates art and if we can take a
slice of life and convey it onto the media of film/video.
The idea is to entertain our audience, if we can achieve that
objective, then I've done my job as a director. Do
talk about your key cast, and why exactly these people?
My key cast were all friends and actors that my producer and I
have worked with on past films. The four main female leads I
cast from hanging out at a bar one night and we all joked about
working on a film together. Fast forward a year later, we
wrapped
Clown Fear
with the four ladies from that night. The
main Clown played by Marv Blauvelt wasn't my original casting
choice. We had issues with the original actor on the first
day of shoot, so I decided at the last minute to replace him with
Marv. Marv did an amazing job stepping into that
multi-dimensional role. You can feel his rage, passion and
fear as the alpha clown leader. Gianni Capaldi did a wonderful job
playing the groom in the film.
A
few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?
The shoot was challenging due to the short amount of days we had
scheduled to film the entire movie. It also rained a couple
days during the shoot which delayed us a little more.
Besides the hiccups, the atmosphere on the set was very creative.
Everyone there had a commonality for the love of the arts. The
$64-question of course, where can Clown Fear be seen? DVDs are available at Walmart, Target, and BestBuy across the
country and Canada. Digital copies for rent and/or purchase
on Amazon, Hulu, iTunes, and Apple TV. Anything
you can tell us about audience and critical reception of Clown Fear
yet? We had a premiere screening of the movie on Feb.
22nd to a full house and it was extremely well received.
There were a lot of laughter throughout the movie along with
screams. Any future projects you'd like to share? I'm currently working
on a new action/thriller called Asphalt Jungle.
There's also been a movement for sequel to my dark romantic comedy
Hit List. So I'll see if they want to do Hit List 2.
What
got you into filmmaking in the first place, and did you receive any formal
training on the subject? I've always loved to
paint and take photographs. Filmmaking is the perfect
merging of the two arts. I've never had formal training as a
director but learned everything on my own from the ground up.
My first job was a production assistant (PA) on a TV show call
Pacific Blues back in 2000. What can you tell us about your
filmwork prior to Clown Fear? My
work mainly stems from the commercial world. I worked on
major brands like Chevy, Budweiser and Li Ning for the Chinese
television market. I produced several shows which
aired on The History Channel. My romantic comedy film Hit List which I directed in 2011 is now available
worldwide. I have a #MeToo documentary Rocking The
Couch that is currently available on Amazon. How would you
describe yourself as a director? I'm very chilled
on the set. I don't panic or stress when I direct. I
know my shots and work with my team to get what I need. Filmmakers who inspire
you? I have several directors that has shaped my
career. During the early days, I was truly inspired by
Robert Rodriguez after he released his book Rebel Without A Crew.
I love the way Tarantino crafts his dialogue in Reservoir
Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Michael Bay has a
way of capturing emotions in his sunsets and helicopter scenes. Spielberg with his poignant human tragedy story in
Schindler's List. Your favourite movies? Wow, that's a tough one. I have so
many. Here are some on the top of my list: Shawshank
Redemption, Zombieland,
Aliens, Deadpool, The English Patient. ... and of
course, films you really deplore?
