First of all, why don't you introduce yourself to those of us who don't already know you?

My name is Matt Borlenghi, Italian/American actor currently based in the USA (for now), and I'm best known for my work on Cobra Kai, All My Children and Police Academy: The Series.

Many people might know you from playing Lyle on Cobra Kai - so what can you tell us about your character, about working on the series, and how did you get the gig even?

When I was approached about the role of Lyle the #pawnshopguy I did not picture myself in the role, or, better put, I was not sure the show's creators would see me as a typical pawn shop owner, so I took care to make sure that the choices I made in the dialogue delivery would be different from any other actor's delivery. It worked. I had no idea that I'd become a recurring character, and what a wonderful experience it was; an honor and a privilege.

You've also recently been in the movie Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story - so do talk about that one for a bit, and your character in it!

In Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story I play the record label executive who put Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam on the map. Working on this film was a joy as I got to spend time with the real Lisa Velez and Toni Menage and pick their brains regarding their memories and getting their blessing to play with my dialogue and attitudes to better round my character.

Any other current and future projects you'd like to share?

I have recently filmed 3 TV pilots, 2 of which I'm also a producer on, Townsend and Letters to Addy, and Daddy's Place, in which I play the best friend to the character played by rapper Big Daddy Kane in his first foray into scripted comedy TV.

What got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I started dreaming of being an actor at age 7, and started studying it in the theater department at Beverly Hills High School (yes, 90210), then the LA Lee Strasberg Institute, among others.

Any past film and TV work of yours you'd like to talk about?

With the exception of two very silly, low value films when I first started out, I am proud of the many TV series and films I've been blessed to have been part of. One of my series, Pig Sty, is amongst my favorites, and all 13 episodes are viewable on YouTube, which I'd only recently been made aware of, and it still makes me laugh.

Having been in both films and TV series, how do these compare to one another, and which do you actually prefer?

I'd have to say that my favorite medium is sitcoms because it's a few days of rehearsals and dialogue tweaks then show night, filming in front of a live audience. I love that factor because it has a live theater vibe to it and one can tell right away whether a joke lands by virtue of the audience's reaction.

How would you describe yourself as an actor, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I think I'm a fairly capable actor. I mean, I'm no Brando, but I'm pretty good. I don't have a particular method other than to just keep it real, listen and react appropriately. Acting is not "acting", acting is "reacting honestly".

Actors (and indeed actresses) who inspire you?

Your favourite movies?

Raging Bull, Forrest Gump (the perfect film), Streetcar Named Desire.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

The Substance. I thought it was simply atrocious. I don't get it, other than addressing ageism in Hollywood.

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?

I'd like to remind other actors/entertainers to remain humble and grateful. You really don't know when the dance might be over, so don't be a dick while the music is playing.

Thanks for the interview!
