Your new movie E19 Virus
- in a few words, what is it about?
E19 Virus
is a 2014 American apocalyptic film that I made in
2015. Three teens are taken in by a scientist who injects them with an
experimental drug. The teens experience extra abilities after the
injection. What were your
inspirations when writing E19
Virus? And is the zombie genre something you're at all fond of,
and what do you think will make your movie stand out of the crowd? One
of the lead characters in Venial
Josh Pickel was pushing to do
a zombie film. I wanted to do something different so then E19 Virus
was
created. You
have chosen three young boys to be the lead characters of your movie - why
is that then? It's a zombie film from a young teen's
perspective. It's about what 3 young teen would do during an apocalypse. It
was interesting to see this type of vision in this type of genre. Knowing you work only rarely from a fixed
script, has that at all changed with E19
Virus, and how easy or difficult was it especially for your child
actors to improvise their way through their scenes? I never
work with a script. Only one person had lines and that was because he
literally just stepped off a plane and I had 45 minutes to shoot the
scene. You would be surprised how creative people can be when they need to
improvise. A writer could never foresee this.
Connected
to that, what can you tell us about your cast, why exactly these people,
and what was it like working with them? The more you work
with the same actors the more you know their abilities and how far you can
push them. Every movie, they just getting better and better. Those who are
serious bout their craft get chosen for the next one. Not everyone does. You play the key
scientist in your movie - have you written him with yourself in mind from
the get-go, and what did you draw upon to bring him to life? I
was the fill-in, like in most cases when I'm in a film. If I see something
missing I'll fill the void. Do
talk about your directorial approach to your story for a bit! Small
cast, small crew, small budget and lots of focus! With
E19 Virus being mostly
an outdoors movie, do talk about your locations for a bit, and what was it
like filming there?
Lots of bites from insects and dealing
with noises in the forest. Some noises where good others not so good.
Everyone was falling and tripping over rocks and roots but we made it
happen. What can you tell us about the shoot
as such, and the on-set atmosphere? I think when you have
done one other successful film and the actors know about it they want to
push the atmosphere to the next level. Each movie that I do sparks a huge
level of interest from the people who work on it. At the end of the day we
do a lot to promote the films and people who are in it. The $64 question of
course, where can your movie be seen? For now, it can be
bought at joeciminera.com
- I'm trying to take full control of all movies made by me. Any future
projects you'd like to share?
