Your new film La Bête Immonde/KKK: The Cruel Beast - in a few words, what is it about?

It’s a movie about a young beautiful woman who wants to know the truth about her brother's death. She ignores the consequences.

You just have to talk about your film's fictional location Maggelburg for a bit, and what was it based on?

You know, Maggelburg isn’t a real town. It’s funny cause a lot of people believed that this town exists, in Germany, or Belgium, or Luxembourg. Of course, you can put this town in this area of Europe. I’ve lived in Germany, in Cologne, I’ve friends in Belgium - surely that was an influence.

Other sources of inspiration when writing La Bête Immonde?

A lot of inspirations. I’ve tried to mix realism and mythology. I love dark fantasy. Stories with strange forests. I didn’t like Blair Witch Project, but I’ve appreciated the idea. I read a lot of things about mysterious animals too. I’ve seen Troll, the movie of 1986. Fantastic. And surely, I’ve been influenced by vintage Disney - KKK is built like a dark fairytale... I have to point out that I thought about Jean Rollin too. He was an extraordinary French moviemaker.

La Bête Immonde sees the return of your recurring character, the highly conflicted Statross Reichmann - so what can you tell us about Statross in this movie, how does he compare to former incarnations, and will he return again in future films of yours?

Statross Reichmann is like Dracula or Freddy Krueger. A dark myth. An allegory of racism too. In the previous movies, people came to know Statross like a strange, poor, coloured victim. Things change in this new movie. It’s a new point of view on him. But I think I said a lot of things about alterity, racism, I would like to turn the page. And I'm not sure I will realise any more movies. First, I'm singer, then I'm tired of it, and I’ve lost a lot of money.

I would describe La Bête Immonde a rather calm and lyrical film despite the many sensationalist topics it touches. Did you ever feel the temptation to just go over-the-top, and what can you tell us about your directorial approach to your subject matter as such?

Marlène Pons, Ariane.

I don’t work for MTV. I’m free. KKK is not a clip. It’s a movie. We need to see and understand the characters.

What can you tell us about your cast, and what made your actors and actresses perfect for their roles?

Ariane. is a mysterious woman, I'm not sure she will appear in other movies, she accepted for me.

Maïk Darah plays Miss Severia Bourgeois, she’s famous in France for her voice, she’s the French voice of Whoopi Goldberg.

I’ve seen Marlène Pons in a kind of a TV reality-show.

Key sequences of La Bête Immonde are set in a haunted forest, which seems to be a recurring theme in your movies. So what can you tell us about the particular forest you used in La Bête Immonde, and your predeliction for forests as such?

I like forests - to walk inside. Last year, I made a tour through the forests of Amatola Mountains, in South Africa. One time, I was lost, but it felt good. It was such an experience! It’s dark, beautiful, strange, forests in Europe, or Asia, or Africa are fantastic places of legends. Once again, I must say thank you Disney too. In the old Disney-movies, the forest was a character.

What can you tell us about the shoot as such and the on-set atmosphere?

It was tiring. Fascinating but tiring. It’s funny cause during the shoot in the forest, I didn’t feel the atmosphere, I was so stressed. Maybe for actors it was different.

Feeling lucky?

The $64-question of course: Where is the film available from?

On Ebay, priceminister, CD-LP, and you can find the movie in Movies 2000 in Paris.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

In 2013, I will inaugurate my ten years of career ! I will sing in a beautiful theatre in Paris, plus some concerts in other towns. I'm waiting for answers, I've sent books, I want to write, write, again, and again...

Your/your movie's website, Facebook, whatever else?

For English-speaking people: http://kkkthecruelbeast.blogspot.fr/

The movie will be avalaible with English subtitles.

Anything else you are dying to tell us and I have merely forgotten to ask?

I want to say thank you to the cast, to people who helped me to realise this project. Cause I think it’s really my last movie.

Thanks for the interview!
