Your new movie Por Mi
Hija - in a few words, what is it about, and what can you tell us
about your character in it?
Por Mi
Hija
is the story of a young married couple who decide to move to the
United States, undocumented, looking for a better life. There, they are
met with a harsh reality. Emma, a pure-hearted woman, finds herself
conflicted when her family values and desires don’t align.
What did you draw upon to
bring your character to life, and how much Daniela Vidaurre can we
actually find in Emma?
I
drew a lot from my Mexican family and, specifically, my grandmother (whose
name happens to be Emma!) She is a graceful woman who values God, family,
and principles. Although my character and I are very different, our love
for family and good intentions towards others are something we have in
common.
How did you get involved with the
project, and to what extent can you identify with the movie's central
theme?
I
wanted to be a part of this project before I even finished the script! I
immediately let director Fernando Rodriguez know that I wanted to audition and here we are
now! The theme is a great reminder of how pursuing something we think we
need makes us lose focus on what truly matters. I think most of us can
identify with that! What can you tell us about Por
Mi Hija's director Fernando Rodriguez [Fernando
Rodriguez interview - click here], and what was your
collaboration like?
Fernando
knew exactly what he wanted as far as performances and shots, yet he
always left room for us to be creatively free. There was a lot of
communication, respect, and trust which I am grateful for! A few words about the shoot as such,
and the on-set atmosphere? To
say it was an incredible experience is an understatement. Fernando made
sure everyone was comfortable, happy, and taken care of. We ALWAYS had
good food (which is a plus for this foodie). The cast and crew alike were
excited to work. I had so much fun. It was set heaven. Any future projects you'd
like to share? I
am currently preparing for two exciting roles! Stay tuned! What got you into acting in the first
place, and did you recieve any formal training on the subject? I
knew I wanted a career in acting after doing a class play when I was in
the 4th grade, but I started my film career only four years ago. I have
never received any formal training – what I know I have learned watching
movies, on set, and doing a few school plays! (Special mention to Maricela
Perez, a spectacular singer and actor, who taught me a lot of what I use
today.) What
can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Por
Mi Hija?
Of
course! I’ve had the honor to play some interesting roles – a woman
who psychologically starts turning into a bear, an AI (artificial
intelligence) soldier, and an addict who goes in and out of rehab, to name
a few. I love taking on challenging, unusual roles that have depth and
many layers to them.
How would you describe yourself as an
actress, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life? I
would describe myself as versatile and relentless. My process, summarized,
is: read the script many times, develop the character in depth, become the
character, and live life, as closely as possible, as they would. This is
my favorite part of the job – almost beats the actual filming! Actresses
(and indeed actors) who inspire you? There
are many performances from a variety of actors that have inspired me
throughout the years. These are at the top of my list: Cillian Murphy,
Javier Bardem, John David Washington, Nicole Kidman, Zendaya, Kate
Winslet, Jennifer Lawrence, Tilda Swinton, Adam Driver. Your favourite
movies? Requiem
For A Dream, City of God, Interstellar, Roma, Kill
Bill, Dune, and Silver
Linings Playbook are a few of my top films! ... and of course, films you really deplore?
Although
there may be films I would not watch again, I will always applaud writers,
directors, actors, and crew for sharing their art! Your
website, social media, whatever else? Instagram
is my favorite social media platform so you’ll see more activity from me
there! My handle is @danielavidaurre; my website: danielavidaurre.com
