Your film Daddy's Little Girl - in a few words, what is it about?

Daddy's Little Girl is based on actual events from my hometown in Australia. There are 5 different cases from child molestation to child murder. The torture however is not real except for one part. The scene with the barbed wire up the ass was actually done to one the these child killers in jail.

Regarding the very sombre basic subject matter of the film (the loss of a loved one) - was any of this based on personal experience, and did you do any research on the subject? And other sources of inspiration when writing Daddy's Little Girl?

Yes the actual story was inspired by a very close friend of mine, Both her and her friend were molested by her uncle, he kept diaries and film of what he did to these girls from the age of 7/8. He was actually caught because of his diaries.

When Derek finds his daughter on the beach, this was another hometown case where 2 young girls (again around 8 years old) left a family BBQ and were beaten to death by a family friend. The father found them the next day in the sand dunes, only meters from where we shot Derek’s scenes.

How would you describe your directorial approach to your story at hand?

I wanted to challenge myself and attempt to shoot drama then merge into the horror/gore. Although this is only my second feature, I felt I did not learn a single thing with my first film and wanted to really push myself as a director.

Would I do drama again? FUCK NO hahahahaha, I want to do full horror/gore films. People keep saying now my films are “torture porn”. I like this hahaha!

At times, Daddy's Little Girl gets very violent - how easy/hard was it to dream up these sequences, and was there ever a line you refused to cross? And while we're at it, do talk about the effects work on the movie as well!

Man this shit was easy, I have 4 amazing children and coming up with ideas was not to hard at all. I did exactly what Derek did in the movie and went to Google, then found cool torture methods and made them my own. I asked doctors how to keep people awake and that too was told to Derek in the film.

The special FX was so much fun as we had Steve Boyle - Day Breakers, Bait, 30 Days of Night, King Kong, and so many more films. Steve is my hero in FX and since I too am a special FX artist we created some pretty cool affects.

NO WAIT we created “torture porn”.

What can you tell us about your key cast, and why exactly these people?

I originally wanted my daughter Savannah to play Georgia, but my ex (her mum) wouldn’t allow it. Savannah did name the character Georgia. I cast Michael Thomson (Georgia’s dad) because he looked gentle, the kind of lad you wouldn’t pic to take revenge, Allira (Georgia’s mum) was a no brainer, this chick is a frigging insane actress and I believe will do great things in the USA if she gets a chance. Christian (Tommy) was good being your typical Aussie bum, people love Aussie larrikins and know one would never suspect such a young guy could do such heinous crimes. Sean Gannon (Colin) is a very natural Scottish actor and also helped with investing in the film and loves nothing more than to act.

I was very happy with the main cast I chose that’s for sure.

Do talk about the shoot as such for a bit, and the on-set atmosphere!

The filming was awesome, a small yet very passionate crew. They always worked their buts off with NO COMPLAINTS as most indie filmmakers do. They want to just live the dream and make motion pictures so YES, filming was an absolute pleasure.

What can you tell us about critical and audience reception of your film so far?

Hahahahaha, where do I start on this one. It seems if an “indie” filmmaker gets good reviews on IMDb, they must be friends or family. It’s impossible for people to actually like an indie film. Most people down under LOVE Daddy's Little Girl, I have a few haters, and man they hate me hahahaha. One guy has set up fake accounts to bring me down on IMDb, WHY? I have no clue, maybe he is a pedo…

Generally the response to Daddy's Little Girl is good, let's be honest as well, NO ONE likes every movie they see and as filmmakers we are used to this. As they say, you can’t please everyone!

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I am now in pre-production for my four-film “slasher”-franchise called Charlie’s Farm. We have cast Tara Reid, Nathan Jones, Bill Moseley, Kane Hodder and Allira Jaques to STAR in Australia’s first ever slasher franchise. We start shooting Charlie’s Farm in March, I am super excited to get back to Killing people again.

What got you into filmmaking to begin with, and did you receive any formal education on the subject?

Woke up one day and decided that I wanted to make movies, I was already doing special FX, so I guess you could call it a progression into Film. No training at all.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Daddy's Little Girl?

My first film was called Come and Get Me… Moving on.

Look, Come and Get Me was great, but had under 20K budget, no sound, bad lights, but once again LOTS OF TORTURE PORN. Although not the greatest movie ever made, I will always be proud that I did it.

How would you describe yourself as a director?

I have been described as an auteur director; everything is in my head, storyboards, shot lists all go out the window when I am on set. I will try to use with Charlie’s Farm, but any good director will tell you once you get on location your real vision kicks in and it’s on.

Filmmakers who inspire you?

Greg McLean, George Romero and Eli Roth I guessm- to be honest I don’t get inspired by that many people, I don’t watch normal TV, I don’t drink or do drugs, I am ALWAYS at home busy inspiring myself.

Your favourite movies?

Enter the Dragon and ALL Bruce Lee films, The Exorcist, Jaws, Razorback, Evil Dead. Shit man, I could go on there are SO MANY GREAT FILMS.

... and of course, films you really deplore?
